A painting by Goya entitled 'A Picnic], made in 1785-90

'Here's the Summer' [East Suffolk]

Sunday 09 August 2026
15:00 to 17:00

Originally conceived as a musical response to concern for the natural world, the programme includes songs for the season by Purcell, Lanier and Lawes. The musical style is typical of pre-Handelian English music in combining ‘divisions’ [variations] over repeated chords and regular verse structures with greater freedom in instrumental forms.  To match the darker aspects of nature, we have included Purcell’s ‘Plaint’ and ‘Dido’s Lament’, interspersed with instrumental divisions and the imitation of birdsong and dancing.

The Lovekyn Consort

Angela Hicks - Soprano

William Summers - Baroque Flute, Recorder

Ibrahim Aziz - Bass Viol

Stephen Carpenter - Archlute

We will be using instruments of the type played when the music was written, and will be happy to answer questions about them and the music. Anyone able and willing to listen is welcome to attend: no prior knowledge is required. There will be a short interval with refreshments; and is is easy to take a short break from the concert if necessary.
