A allegorical painting of a man playing a lute entitled 'Hearing', by Gonzales Coques 1614-1684

Lute and flute: the migrating tunes of John Dowland [Garrick's Temple]

Saturday 15 August 2026
19:00 to 21:00

The programme of music and letters has been postponed for reasons beyond our control. Instead, there will be an instrumental programme of Dowland's works for lute, versions of his songs for recorder by Jakob Van Eyck, and duets for both instruments.

William Summers - Recorder, Renaissance Flute

Stephen Carpenter - Renaissance Lute

John Dowland [1563 - 1626] was one of England's pre-eminent lutenists, working at the English and Danish court and celebrated for his songs as well as instrumental music. This performance will mark the 400th anniversary of his death.

Dowland's life and music will be introduced by the performers, and no prior knowledge is necessary to appreciate the meditative and intricate music of this fascinating musician.

Booking in advance is cheaper [£14; £8] and advised for this small venue, and tickets can be bought HERE. Admission on the door is still possible [£16].

The painting is 'Hearing' from a series depicting the five senses by Gonzales Coques. It is reproduced by kind permission of the National Gallery.
