Song and Dance Club - Dickens and his era [London]
Saturday 18 October 2025
19:00 to 21:30
The Capability Consort and colleagues perform songs and music and accompany dances inspired by Dickensian characters and drawn from original sources. The performance is part of this year's Bloomsbury Festival and takes place at the iconic Conway Hall. The public are invited to learn and join in with dances at the end of the programme, and those arriving in period costume will be given a free drink at the bar.
The Capability Consort [and colleagues]
William Summers - Flute
Diane Moore - Violin
Jacob Garside - Cello
Ian Watt - Guitar
with Patricia Hammond - Voice; Darren Royston - Choreography
The consort uses period instruments - accurate copies or originals from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The material for this performances will be drawn both from the nearby Charles Dickens Museum
and from the published music of John Oxenford - who set Oliver Twist to music - and William Chappell, who were largely responsible for the re-popularisation of folk and Elizabethan songs in the mid-nineteenth century. We will also incorporate one or two local ballads published in the same era.
Tickets are available HERE.
The portrait was drawn in chalk by Samuel Laurence in 1838, and the original can be found in the National Portrait Gallery.
