Poetry with music [Hampton]
Saturday 28 September 2024
14:00 to 17:00
As a continuation of the event founded by Peter Pegnall, poet, Garrick's Temple to Shakespeare will host some of his colleagues and some of mine to combine music and poetry - sometimes separately, sometimes together. Each contributor will take no more than twenty minutes to introduce and read their work, and there is space left for a few short 'floor spots' for audience members who might like to read one poem of their choice.
The subjects will be very varied, but so far include Sonnets by Shakespeare [Sue Bell], Blake's poems set to music [Katy Carr], Anglo-Saxon riddles [Richard Osmond, William Summers], and scenes from New York [Andrea Holland, hopefully accompanied by brass...]. Timings may vary, but the approximate schedule is here:
2 Tim Cumming
Tim will read from his latest pamphlet Adventures Among the Living and a few new poems from a set with a working title of Everyday Objects in the Home.
2.20 Sue Bell
Shakespeare wrote 154 Sonnets - this is a tiny selection.
2.40 Floor spots [audience contributions]
3 Marta Brassart
Marta will read her poetry in Polish, and then in English translation
3.20 Tea at the Loggia nearby
3.40 Andrea Holland
Andrea will be reading/performing several poems from 'High Wire'; which centres on New York in the early 1980's, with some accompanied by Chris Dowding on brass in an experimental jazz partnership
4 Jude Alderson
Jude is a writer, theatre director and actor, and will read from her current work: a memoir set in New York, Berlin, Bordeaux and San Francisco in the late 60's - early 80's; and a version of Phaedra which she has just been directing in France.
4.20 Floor spot [audience contributions] [or second spot/music if no-one comes forward]
4.40 Katy Carr
The British singer-songwriter Katy Carr will be breathing new life into William Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience through her magical vocal and ukulele musical interpretations. For more info on the artist please visit www.katycarr.com
