'Popular music of the Olden Time' [Hampton]

Friday 11 August 2017
19:30 to 21:30

Patricia Hammond and  Chetham's alumnus Matt Redman will be performing songs from musicologist John Oxenford's ground-breaking "Popular Music of the Olden Time, a collection of Ancient Songs, Ballads and Dance Tunes, illustrative of the National Music of England" from 1858. This volume was the first time the general public were given access to the works of Campion, Dowland and others. Also it presented many folk songs in written form for the first time, just as they started to be forgotten. Come and hear the original versions of "A-Hunting We Will Go", "Oh Dear, What Can The Matter Be", "Oh the Oak and the Ash" and many others! Singing along will be encouraged!
