Elizabethan and Jacobean England clashed frequently with its rival Spain in search not only for riches in the New World but also for ideological influence: England increasingly defined itself as Protestant and faced plots - real or imagined - devised by its remaining Roman Catholics. These tensions and loyalties were expressed not only in public events such as the Gunpowder Plot but also in private sacred and domestic music, with high profile musicians including William Byrd and John Dowland composing for both sides. Musicians also crossed boundaries between the devotional and the highly profane, and this programme includes songs of love, loss, loyalty, devotion and lust from England and Spain, along with instrumental fantasias.
